Kunst Hoch @ Schnellenmarkt, Uelzen
With an awful lot of personal problems happening all at once during the last couple of months, I have sadly not had any time left to tend to my artistic projects. It will most likely still take a long time to put all my private affairs in order before I can once again undertake any bigger project. However, shortly before that turbulent time, I had signed up for a project for a local contest Kunst Hoch (3rd ed.) and found myself among the artists who have been chosen to go through with their work and present it, for the period of three months, at the outdoor exhibition in the city centre of Uelzen. The project is now finished and will be exhibited at Schnellenmarkt, Uelzen, starting today. Also today, 09.09.2025, an official opening takes place, where you can admire all the winning projects, meet the creators and also vote for your favourite piece of art. The project of which I was a part, was done in collaboration with Anke Späth, Jezy @ PopSickL'art and Stadtatelier für kreative Inklusion. It consists of three individual pieces that all together play to the theme of how the city of Uelzen can be experienced with all the senses. And thus Anke Späth has constructed the sculpture "Rübennasi" that refers to the very specific olfactory experience of smelling the sugar beets being processed for sugar by the local Zuckerfabrik. Jezy's metal art titled "Open Ear" refers to the auditory feast that is Uelzen's own yearly music festival "Open R". Jezy has also submitted another winning project that is a triptych of his favourite places in Uelzen made in acrylics and marker technique (as this is our private project, if you’d like to support us, please vote on us using the QR code provided). As to my creation, titled "Filmreif", it refers to the visual aspects of the city and the historically valued institution that is the Uelzen's Central Theater.
I've first heard about the over 100 year long history of Uelzener Central Theater when we brainstormed for the Projekt. Once I've started my research and learned about the rocky road Frau Böhm, the Theater's central figure, had to walk after she inherited the family business, my imagination was quickly lit. For me this is the story of courage, creativity and innovation, women empowerment and a large piece of cultural tradition of Uelzen. My Projekt refers to the Central Theater as a place of great historical and cultural value for the city of Uelzen. On a velvety red background, reminiscent of old cinema decor, a film camera is presented, made of upcycled camera parts. On a long piece of camera film a gallery of Uelzen's most characteristic places can bee seen. Both the camera and camera film permeate the background to appear partly on both sides.
